How to Budget for Repiping to Avoid Unexpected Costs

There is no one-size-fits-all formula for budgeting for repiping because there are a number of variables. Nevertheless, there are three main parts in the cost of a repiping, so that is what we will discuss in today’s blog article. 

Material for Pipe 

The first big line item is the pipe itself. If you are repiping with something plastic like PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) or CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride), these materials will be much cheaper than copper. Copper, however, has its own advantages and disadvantages. While copper is very durable, it is prone to corrosion in Vancouver where the water is acidic. 

In consultation with your piping professional, you will have to decide what material is going to be used. 

Footprint and Build 

The next major consideration is the size of the house and how it is laid out. The footprint and build will determine not just how much pipe is needed, but how much labour is needed to switch out the pipe. So, in brief, more square footage and more bathrooms will equal a higher cost. 

Drywall Repair 

The last big component is the drywall repair that will be needed after the repiping is done. Some repiping specialists (like us) will repair the damage caused by repiping, and this will be built into the price for the project. Other repiping companies do not include that. Some will offer it as an extra, and some do not tackle it at all. 

If you are handy, it would be possible to repair the drywall yourself or hire a handyman to do so. There will, however, be plenty of holes to patch, so this piece of the project can turn into a significant cost. 

These are the parts that need to be discussed with your repiping professional before you commit to anyone. You will want to be absolutely clear on what tasks you are paying for, and how much they will be.
